Before you secure those plane tickets, check out the results from Travel + Leisure's survey of America's best and worst airports. The findings may have you reconsidering where you take off, connect, and land for your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

In its first-ever airport survey, the magazine asked readers to rate the nation's 22 major airports in seven categories: flight delays, design, amenities, food and drink, check-in and security, service, and transportation and location.

As for some of the most interesting results, many of the best airports on the list took proactive measures in recent years like updating terminals and adding key amenities. On the other hand, several major airports like Los Angeles and Philadelphia may be worth bypassing due to issues surrounding antiquated infrastructure, overcrowding, and massive delays.

Tips: Seek out the earliest flights in the day to avoid delays. Also, look to fly through regional or alternate airports. For instance, Baltimore was rated much higher than Dulles and ranked the best for on-time departures.

You can read the full article here. Read below for the top five best and worst airports.

No. 1 - Minneapolis (MSP)
Well regarded for its shopping, food/drink options, and check-in/security ease. No. 2 for design, cleanliness, baggage handling, staff communication, and airport location.

No. 2 - Charlotte (CLT)
Receives top marks for Wi-Fi, baggage handling, and staff communication, plus third for location, and second best check-in/security process.

No. 3 - Detroit (DTW)
Tops for cleanliness, design, location, lounges, and business centers, plus third for service and fourth in baggage handling.

No. 4 - Orlando (MCO)
MCO ranks high in a number of categories, including third overall for Wi-Fi, No. 2 in shopping, and No. 1 for kids' zones. It finished best overall for luggage trolleys and accessing a rental car.

No. 5 - San Francisco (SFO)
SFO is lauded for its convenient public transportation system. The airport is also clean, boasts a modern design, finished fifth in baggage handling, and has reliable Wi-Fi.

America's Worst Airports

La Guardia ranked worst overall for check-in and security process, baggage handling, Wi-Fi, staff communication, design and cleanliness.

No. 4 - New York (JFK)
JFK ranked low for its distant location, baggage efficiency, service, and long check-in/security queues.

The newlyweds -- who recently traveled to New Zealand for their honeymoon -- have won a free first anniversary trip. You can check out their amazing registry page right here.

Thanks to everyone who shared their honeymoon stories -- we received over 500 submissions! Meanwhile, stay tuned throughout the year as we'll post the Top 30 stories in the coming months.

Read below for a few highlights from their extraordinary trip!

Our honeymoon story winners commenced their once-in-a-lifetime trip in Auckland and explored the North Island while combating jet lag. They also had to quickly figure out how to drive a stick shift on the left side of the road. After only one stop, Shane said, "I've counted seven times now that I've turned on the wipers instead of the blinker as I intended."

The newlyweds also made it down to the South Island for scenic drives, whitewater rafting, ziplining in the rain, helicopter excursions, backcountry hikes, and sea kayaking in Milford Sound.

Said Stacey, "Moving down the island, we were able to mark off several things from Shane's 'bucket list'. First, we made our very own hand-crafted knives before swinging on a 20-foot swing. The blades came out quite nicely, but the true experience was spending a day with an amazing couple in Barrytown who shared their craft and their daily life with us. Just hearing about all the different people they've met while teaching them to make knives was as exciting as forging a blade in the kiln!

"As for the porch swing, well, this is New Zealand and they don't do swings the same way we do. This giant swing hangs from 20-foot telephone poles and you're propelled as your fellow knife-makers haul you backwards until you're almost parallel to the ground at 15 feet up. Then they just let you go. What a rush!"

Check out these five unique volunteer honeymoon ideas that make a difference and create lifelong memories along the way.

Build a School

By building a school in a developing country, you can change the lives of children, families, and an entire community. For instance through Globe Aware's Vietnam Program, you'll create playgrounds, refurbish buildings, build schools, and help raise the standards of living throughout rural Vietnam. Similar opportunities abound, including Honduras, Belize, Kenya, and Tanzania, just to name a few. Meanwhile, just about anyone can volunteer as many programs don't require previous building experience.

Preserve Hiking Trails

It's no secret that it's a constant battle to maintain hiking trails, especially when you consider the effects of erosion, overgrowth, falling trees, flooding, and wildfires. As a trail volunteer, you'll get to connect with nature, support environmental protection, and preserve a legacy for future generations to enjoy.

Look towards the Adirondack Mountain Club, Sierra Club, and American Hiking Association for exciting projects, which can range from a day to a few months. Opportunities currently exist in national parks, state parks, and wilderness preserves all across the U.S. Trail preservation is also one of the most affordable volunteer honeymoon options out there.

Help Endangered Animals

From elephants to turtles to snow leopards, there are currently more than 1,000 endangered animal species around the world. With those staggering numbers in mind, many global conservation centers currently need support from volunteers when it comes to research, rescue, and rehabilitation of these animals. Examples may include monitoring nesting, feeding, providing tours for visitors, working with school children, and conducting research.

In Costa Rica through "i-to-i", you can help monitor turtle nesting areas, record key data, and clear beaches to assist with nesting. You'll spend your days on the sand and get to sample local food, all while helping to preserve this amazing endangered species. Also, check out Hawaii Wildlife Fund and Biosphere Expeditions for more terrific hands-on experiences.

Construct a Home Through Habitat for Humanity

After connecting with Habitat for Humanity, you'll get to construct houses for the homeless and poor, and in the process, help build people's lives. In addition to many opportunities right here in the U.S., the Global Village volunteer program takes volunteers to exciting places where they'll work with others in an effort to build affordable homes for those in need. Common opportunities include house construction, renovations, and disaster relief.

Organic Farming

Organic farming is a type of sustainable agriculture where no synthetic pesticides or harmful fertilizers are used. It's also a key to help fight world hunger, maintain safe water supplies, and prevent pesticide contamination.

For a one-of-a-kind volunteer honeymoon experience centering around organic farming, check out Help Exchange, an online listing of host organic farms, farmstays, ranches and B&Bs. These providers all invite volunteers to stay and work with them on a short-term basis in exchange for food and accommodations.

Well, just because you're about to embark on your honeymoon doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money. In fact, there are a number of remarkable honeymoon destinations in the U.S. that will provide the trip of a lifetime without doing damage to your wallet. Check out these five amazing spots right here in America and start planning your ideal getaway today.

Maine

With a national park, vibrant coastal communities, and a thriving arts scene, Maine offers a little bit of everything for honeymooners on a budget. Start in cosmopolitan Portland, which features a unique variety of restaurants, shops, galleries, and museums. The dining scene is quite renowned, especially for its focus on locally sourced food at reasonable prices. In fact, Portland has one of the highest amounts of restaurants per capita in the U.S.

As you make your way up the coast to Acadia National Park for some hiking and scenic tours, pull over in charming seaside towns like Rockland and Camden. Whether you decide to charter a sailboat for the day, indulge in some clam chowder, or just take a romantic stroll along the waterfront, the options are plentiful.

Las Vegas

While America's Playground is certainly portrayed as an exotic, luxurious destination, you can still get the most out of the city while keeping to a budget.

For starters, flights to Las Vegas can be cheap if you do your homework and plan ahead. Meanwhile, nightly room rates are generally inexpensive, even at top resorts like Tropicana where midweek rates in June start around $79. Plus, don't forget the city's famous buffets like the Garden Court Buffet at Main Street Casino. These all-you-can-eat extravaganzas usually come at a good value.

Be sure to escape the bright lights for a few days and visit unforgettable (and inexpensive) sites like the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.

Washington D.C.

When it comes to free attractions and experiences, our nation's capital is tough to beat. Take a romantic walk along the National Mall, tour the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, or visit the Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin. After you've gotten your history fix, browse through the many boutiques in Georgetown, hit up Kramerbooks in Dupont Circle, and head over to Eastern Market for fresh food, handmade goods, and live events.

Meanwhile, Northern Virginia is also packed with exciting budget-minded activities, including hundreds of wineries, charming small towns, historic sites and battlefields, and picturesque country roads.

Savannah

In addition to being one of America's most romantic and best-preserved cities, Savannah is also a great honeymoon destination thanks to affordable prices at many local hotels and restaurants.

Situated in one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, the elegant Kehoe House B&B is a great value. Take time to walk around Savannah's cobblestone streets, gorgeous public squares, and wonderful riverfront arts district. You'll soon discover that the city has a sophisticated vibe yet still retains its southern charm.

Plus, you can use Savannah as your home base to explore beautiful nearby beach destinations like St. Simons Island.

Sleeping with the Fishes

The ultra luxurious resort Conrad Maldives Rangali Island features an underwater restaurant where guests can dine about 16 feet below the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, this truly unique spot can also be converted into a guest suite. In addition to being surrounded by colorful coral, white-sand beaches, and millions of fish, the room is highlighted by arched plexiglass while the entrance area sports a spiral staircase.

Put Your Records On

The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs certainly stands out by featuring an array of recycled and sustainable materials, plus vintage furnishings and amenities. Perhaps coolest of all: many rooms come with vintage record players and dozens of vinyl selections that you can play anytime in your room. With your own private patio area and fire pit, it's going to be a most memorable stay.

The Ultimate Balinese Experience

The Four Seasons Sayan in Bali is situated in the central highlands near Ubud and offers amazing views of rice terraces and lush forest. It's also a great location for excursions and active pursuits, which can easily be arranged through the hotel (think hiking, elephant trekking, river rafting, kayaking, nature walks, and Balinese farming experiences).

Guests can also participate in a Tri Hita Karana experience, a one-day program based on the Hindu philosophy of life. Translating to "three sources of life", you can experience all three of these through meditation sessions, a temple tour, a Balinese cooking class, and a "tiger grass cooler treatment" at the property's rejuvenating spa.

Cruisin' Waikiki

At the Aqua Lotus Honolulu, enjoy complimentary use of beach cruiser bikes to explore Waikiki, plan a picnic, or visit iconic sites like Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo. The boutique hotel's prime location is right between Diamond Head Crater and downtown Waikiki, making a great home base for Oahu exploration.

Take the Plunge

It's impossible not to embrace the relaxing honeymoon vibe at Capella Pedregal, easily one of the finest resorts in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Every room and suite here features an infinity edge plunge pool, perfect for daily dips out on your private terrace and spectacular ocean views. Plus, with 24-hour, in-room dining and beverage service available, you may never want to leave your suite.

Check out these four incredible foodie experiences for some honeymoon inspiration this year.

Cooking Classes

Hands-on cooking classes are a unique way to learn about local culture, culinary techniques, and specialty dishes of a particular country or region.

From molecular gastronomy sessions to desserts, Paris is renowned for its wide variety of classes, many of which are taught in English. Try La Cuisine Paris or Cook'n with Class for traditional French cuisine classes set in the heart of the city. You'll get the chance to work with the head chef and other group members to create masterful dishes, all while learning about French techniques, ingredients, and recipes.

Most major honeymoon destinations around the world offer cooking classes, you'll just need to do a little research to seek them out. Cooking experiences are even popular in exotic locales like Morocco, where participants may head to the local souk searching for couscous and tagines before eventually enjoying the fruits of their labor. Fes Cooking and Hakima's Cooking School are two of Morocco's finest cooking programs.

Festivals & Events

Sample a variety of delicious offerings that highlight your honeymoon destination through a food festival, wine event, or beer tasting.

Held in Munich each year, Oktoberfest is one of the most recognizable festivals in the world. In addition to serving massive amounts of beer selections, festivalgoers can sample dozens of traditional Bavarian dishes like weisswurst and schweinsbraten. Meanwhile, Taste of Chicago is arguably America's leading outdoor food festival highlighted by distinctive regional food like Chicago-style pizza, ribs, sausage, and hot dogs.

Food & Walking Tour

Food tours are a unique way to experience a city and its neighborhoods. You'll head out with an expert guide to renowned restaurants, bakeries, food markets, and more, getting an insider's perspective to your destination's finest eating establishments.

Foods of New York Tours offers a number of options, including tours of Chinatown, Greenwich Village, and Chelsea Market. Participants can learn about the city's historic neighborhoods while stopping at numerous eateries to enjoy delicious food specialties -- whether it be steamed dumplings at a dim sum restaurant or gourmet bread from an artisanal bakery. Also, Hawaii Food Tours combines markets, restaurants, and other local favorites for a mouth-watering four-hour culinary excursion around Honolulu.

Food Trucks & Cheap Eats

The recent emergence of gourmet food trucks has produced some of the tastiest and most convenient food on the planet. Food trucks are just about everywhere in the U.S. these days, including a number of top honeymoon spots.

Kogi BBQ in Los Angeles serves up terrific Korean-Mexican fusion like short rib tacos and kimchi quesadillas. In San Francisco, Spencer on the Go offers outstanding French takeaway. Also, Dim Ssam a Go-Go in sunny Miami takes Asian Fusion to a whole new level.

All the while, traditional izakayas are also a great alternative to high-class dining in Japan. These lively, fast-paced restaurants typically serve shared dishes with numerous drink options like sake, beer, and cocktails. The izakaya experience is a must for visitors to Japan, especially before a night out on the town. Start with Gonpachi or Ogikubo Ichibe in Tokyo.

Packed with lush forests, mountains, white-sand beaches, colorful towns, and excellent water sports, Grenada is one of the Caribbean's most picturesque and authentic islands. While the gorgeous capital city of St. George's understandably attracts many cruise-ship crowds, the island still manages to keep a laid-back vibe and has largely prevented mass tourism from changing its extraordinary landscape.

Start with the historic capital of St. George's with its beautiful natural harbor framed by colorful Georgian colonial buildings. This city is easily one of the most picturesque in the entire West Indies, complete with red-tile roofs, hilltop forts (Fort George and Fort Frederick), and bustling markets (Market Square).

Known as the "Isle of Spice" due to its production of nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and mace crops, Grenada is actually one of the world's biggest spice exporters. In fact, many spice companies on the island are open to the public, including De la Grenada Industries, which features verdant gardens, facility tours, and acres of tropical fruit. The island is also home to a number of distilleries, including the renowned River Antoine Rum Distillery in St. Andrew's, one of the oldest rum distilleries in the world.

Beach lovers will immediately fall in love with Grand Anse Beach, widely considered one of the top beaches in the world. With two miles of white sand, crystal clear waters, and breezy palms, this sheltered strip of shoreline is perfect for water sports, romantic walks, and lazy days in the sun. Also, just south of Grand Anse, scenic and peaceful Morne Rouge Beach is one of Grenada's most underrated beach spots.

Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts will go wild over Grand Etang Forest Reserve. Located in the center of the island, this rainforest is filled with giant palm, wildflowers, bamboo, exotic monkeys, tropic birds, and Grand Etang Lake, an extinct volcano crater. The park also features an excellent trail network. Be sure to take the Shoreline Trail for a leisurely trek around the magnificent mountain lake.

After sustaining devastating damage from Hurricane Ivan in 2004, including extensive destruction to its crucial spice industry, Grenada has bounced back and is now thriving more than ever before.

Newlyweds thinking of a Caribbean honeymoon this year will find Grenada to be a most enchanting destination. With a wide range of accommodation options, gorgeous scenery, historic sites, wide stretches of sand, plus numerous outdoor activities available, the trip of a lifetime awaits.

With its unique attractions, distinct neighborhoods, and iconic structures, the Big Apple is a romantic honeymoon hotspot for travelers all over the world.

No matter the season, Central Park is as romantic as it gets. During the summer months, pick up picnic supplies at Zabar's on the Upper West Side before claiming a spot on the Great Lawn and spending the afternoon people watching. If you visit when the weather turns chilly, take part in a romantic winter tradition by ice skating at Wollman Rink, established in 1950.

Next, make your way to the quaint streets of the West Village with its many boutique shops and top-notch restaurants. Colorful, tree-lined, and a welcomed respite from an otherwise lively city, Barrow, Grove, and Commerce Streets are all ideal for a romantic afternoon stroll. Head north to Chelsea Market and wander through the bustling concourse with its unique food stalls and specialty stores. Be sure to ramble along the High Line, a truly amazing elevated greenway that connects the West Village and Chelsea.

It can transport you to places - and even eras - better than any other mode of transportation. For an unforgettable journey on your upcoming honeymoon, consider these nine amazing train excursions departing from all over the world.

Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express

While the original Orient Express is no longer in service, newlyweds can still indulge in a similar experience on board the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express. The scenic and luxurious journey features vintage cabins that convert from daytime seating into deluxe bedrooms, plus amazing cuisine, onboard entertainment, and more. The classic two-day trip goes from London to Venice and winds through France's picturesque countryside and the Swiss Alps.

Napa Valley Wine Train

This memorable excursion takes riders through scenic Napa Valley wine terrain in masterfully restored vintage rail cars. The antique train makes a 36-mile journey through the heart of the valley and offers regional food, fantastic wines (including tastings), and unparalleled panoramic views. Guests can also book winery packages that include gourmet lunch or dinner on board, your train fare, and a private group tour of Napa's finest wineries.

Isle of Man Steam Railway

This historic railway on the Isle of Man was a major inspiration for Rev Wilbert Awdry to write "Thomas the Tank Engine." Set on a charming British island in the middle of the Irish Sea, the steam railway enables passengers to step back in time through its original locomotives and carriages stemming from 1874. On the journey from Douglas to Port Erin, the train winds through beautiful countryside, including forests, grasslands, and farms.

Trans-Siberian Railway

This groundbreaking and oft-referenced railway is the longest in the world and transports passengers between Moscow and the Pacific port city of Vladivostok, with options to Beijing, China, as well. Simply, the journey is one of the most memorable travel experiences in the world.

Perfect for adventurous couples, you'll span seven time zones, visit historic stations, meet countless new friends, pass by gorgeous scenery, and have the opportunity to hop off at "must-see" destinations. To get a great impression of the journey, read about Allison and Martin's amazing experience in our Real Members section.

Canadian Rockies - VIA Rail Canada

Put the Canadian Rockies in your front lap with an unforgettable rail journey in western Canada. Take the 720-mile trek between the Canadian Rockies and the North Pacific Coast (i.e. Jasper to Prince Rupert) and whiz past white-capped mountains, glacial rivers, jagged canyons, and great stretches of wilderness. "Touring Class" packages include three meals a day and access to a dome car featuring 360-degree views.

Swiss Alps

Switzerland has one of the world's greatest rail networks, with many routes taking passengers up into picturesque mountain terrain. The Bernina Express is a fantastic journey that begins with a bus trip in sunny Lugano along the shores of Lake Como before starting up in Tirano and climbing high into the Swiss Alps. The trip passes through charming small towns and boasts amazing views of glaciers, waterfalls, forests, and mountains. The route finishes in eastern Switzerland in the scenic towns of Davos, Chur, and St. Moritz.

Mexico's Copper Canyon

Comparable to the Grand Canyon in the American Southwest, Mexico's Copper Canyon is a fascinating natural wonder and quite the enchanting destination. For a most memorable and intimate experience, take the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway, also known as "El Chepe", and make your way past rugged canyons, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls. The tracks cover 39 bridges, 86 tunnels and climb as high as 8,000 feet to unforgettable vistas.

Classic Grand Canyon Railway

Enjoy historic train travel on a vintage train from Williams to Grand Canyon National Park. Pass through pine forests and dry desert on your way to the South Rim of one of the world's greatest natural wonders. Whether you stay for the afternoon or a few days, there are seemingly endless activities on the agenda once you arrive, including mule trips, hiking, river excursions, and museum excursions.

The Blue Train South Africa

The Blue Train is an elegant and romantic five-star luxury passenger train in South Africa that takes travelers between Pretoria and Cape Town (roughly 1,000 miles). This "magnificent moving five-star hotel" features butler service, lounge cars, observation cars, and superb guest suites with marble tiles and gold fittings. The scenic route zips passengers through the amazing South African countryside and features incredible meals paired with regional wines.

Ever wanted to witness an exciting soccer game in Europe between regional rivals? No matter if you're a sports enthusiast or just a casual fan, a sports-centric honeymoon will provide memories of a lifetime and give you a unique chance to learn about other cultures, pastimes, and events. Whether it's a spring training game in between trips to the beach in Florida or an authentic bullfighting experience in Madrid, consider these seven sports-themed ideas for your upcoming honeymoon.

Baseball

Experience America's favorite pastime wherever your honeymoon plans take you. If you're visiting sunny Florida or Arizona, grab tickets to a spring training game in February or March. Taking a road trip across the country? Stop by a famous minor league ballpark like Raley Field in Sacramento, MCU Park in Brooklyn, or Durham Bulls Athletic Park in North Carolina and see why the games are renowned for their amazing fan experiences. Or go big with a major league baseball experience. The Miami Marlins will be moving into a brand new state-of-the-art stadium starting in 2012.

Sports Museums

Take a trip down nostalgia lane by making a detour to a sports museum or Hall of Fame. With many museums located in destination cities around the world, it's a relaxing and memorable way to spend an afternoon. Some of our favorite museums include the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, the International Tennis Hall of Fall & Museum in Newport, Rhode Island, the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, and the Lake Placid Olympic Museum in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Rodeo

Get a true taste of the Wild West by experiencing a rodeo on your upcoming honeymoon. From Western Canada to the Rocky Mountain states of the U.S., rodeo competitions are a traditional spectacle, showcasing the best bull riders, cowboys, and barrel racers around. Visiting Yellowstone National Park on your honeymoon? The Jackson Hole Rodeo is open Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer and located at the picturesque Teton County Fairgrounds in downtown Jackson.

Soccer

As the world's most popular sport, it's not hard to find a professional soccer match going on wherever you may be traveling -- and that includes dozens of top honeymoon destinations like France, Italy, and Mexico. See if you can book tickets for a riveting national contest in the country you're visiting, whether it's the Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga, or Mexican Primera Division. Serious soccer fans should book well in advance for major cup match-ups such as UEFA, Euro, or Champions League.

Bullfighting

Popular in Spain, Portugal, and several Latin American countries, bullfighting has been a traditional sport in these locations for centuries. If your honeymoon plans have you visiting Spain, be sure to head to Las Ventas in Madrid for some of the very best bullfighting in the world. Consider a visit during May or June during the San Isidro Festival. Meanwhile, Plaza de Toros in Mexico City is another famous bullfighting stadium and considered the largest ring in the world.

Sumo Wrestling

Sumo is a tradition Japanese form of wrestling entertainment that dates back many centuries. For honeymooners traveling to Japan, a sumo event should be at the top of your "must-do" activities list. From the exciting competition to the ancient rituals and to colorful atmosphere, the entire experience is quite a spectacle. See if you can attend one of the Grand Tournaments. These exciting sumo events are held throughout the year at a number of iconic Japanese venues.

Tennis

Like soccer, professional tennis is also one of the world's most popular sports and features quite an expansive tour schedule. Best of all, each of the four major championships are held in world-class destinations: Melbourne, Paris, London, and New York. Or simply attend a regional ATP tour event like the Rogers Cup in Toronto or Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
