Sally & Michael

November 11, 2011

Christmas Day, 2011. We awake in Shanghai. One man's solemn quest for the ultimate soup dumpling begins...

From China’s most populous city, to the temples and jungles of Northern Thailand, to the island paradise of Koh Mak, to the crazy bustle of Bangkok, we can’t imagine a more fun, exciting and romantic way to spend our honeymoon.

We can't wait!

Lots of love,

Mike and Sally

We're going to Shanghai; Chiang Mai; Trat; Koh Mak; Bangkok!

Our adventure will take us from Shanghai to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, then down to Trat and the island of Koh Mak, and finally to Bangkok.

We’ve always dreamed of traveling to Asia, so this really will be the trip of a lifetime for us both. We’ve tried to create a itinerary with a good balance of relentless, systematic sightseeing (for Mike), idyllic, beachfront relaxation (for Sally) and opportunities for Bourdain-style posturing on the socio-cultural situation of a region we know nothing about (for whomever drinks the most)...

Flash Hotel - The best way to recover from a 14-hour flight is with a little luxury. Plus, this is Mike's first ever Christmas away from his Mummy, so he will need some pampering. We picked Le Royal Meridien for its design, location and amazing views.

Soup Dumplings - Have we mentioned that we like these? Xiaolongbao is the only Chinese word we know, and possibly the only one we'll need. Holds its own against any food format.
Gift Fulfilled
Dinner For Two - The fact that we would happily eat bad Chinese food every night leads us to believe that we're going to LOVE good Chinese food.
Gift Fulfilled
Breakfast In Bed - Most mornings in our house go something like this: Sally - "Do we have to get up?" Mike - "I'm hungry." Occasionally, it's nice for neither of us to have to compromise.
Gift Fulfilled
Round Of Black Sambucas - Mike hasn't missed a Christmas Eve of binge drinking with his mates in 22 years. Wirral boys, in keeping with tradition, please ensure his Christmas birthday morning is ruined.
Gift Fulfilled
Flight From Shanghai To Chiang Mai - A somewhat essential gift in terms of expediting the transition from China to Thailand.
Gift Fulfilled
Zen-like Retreat - Designed by two of Thailand’s top architects, the Lanna-style Rachamankha boutique hotel is an oasis of peace and tranquility in the center of Chiang Mai. But the hotel would say that...
Gift Fulfilled
Spa Treatment - Mike is against massages, but is also against therapy, so this issue seems likely to remain unexplained. Sally, however, is perfectly happy being manhandled by strangers, and would love to be treated to some R&R.
Gift Fulfilled
Elephant Camp - This is right at the top of our wishlist. After years of living with the dumbest creature in the animal kingdom, we're very excited to spend a day with one of the smartest.
Gift Fulfilled
Dinner For Two - We can't wait to try Northern Thai food, which is apparently very unique. The Lanna Kingdom did not become part of Thailand until much later than the rest of the country. Blah, blah, Google.
Gift Fulfilled
Flight To Trat - The beach is calling...
Gift Fulfilled
Trat Guesthouse - Yes, it is really is that cheap. Trat is a stop-off town for people traveling to the islands. Maybe a backpacker at this hotel will slip us a map with directions to a fractious commune on a secret beach...
Gift Fulfilled
Speedboat To Koh Mak - There are two ways to get to Koh Mak. You can take a 3-hour trip on a packed wooden schooner, or blast there in 45 on a speedboat. We’re very much liking the sound of the second option.
Gift Fulfilled
Beach Bungalow - The last word a bride wants to hear on her honeymoon is "hut" (ok, maybe "outhouse"), but the Big Easy's luxury beach cabins elevate that word to a whole new level.
Gift Fulfilled
Mopeds - Two vacation truisms: 1) It’s suddenly totally fine to walk around outside in the equivalent of underwear. 2) Mopeds become cool.
Gift Fulfilled
Mountain Bikes - Sally's moment of clarity about Mike's plans for Thailand: "You're just going to eat all day, aren't you?" Help him burn some of it off. Please.
Gift Fulfilled
Kayaks - Our mutual issues with competition and control preclude most joint sporting activities, but kayaking seems to work, so we both love it.
Gift Fulfilled
Beach Massage - The warm sand. The sound of the surf. An old man pummeling your central nervous system. Make Sally's dream come true.
Gift Fulfilled
Trip To Pearl Farm - Who’d have thought there would be a crossover point between Mike’s love of seafood and Sally’s love of gemstones? Honeymoon souvenir opportunity.
Gift Fulfilled
Bottle Of Champagne - A romantic New Year's Eve on the beach, looking up at the stars. Until a couple of thousand New Moon ravers rock up.
Gift Fulfilled
Thai Cooking Class - This is for all those evenings spent staring blankly at a kaffir leaf or gagging on a lemongrass stalk. We love Thai food, but desperately need somebody to teach us the basics.
Gift Fulfilled
Flight From Trat To Bangkok - A one-way ticket to sin city...
Gift Fulfilled
Private Car To Hotel - "Always arrive in style." Azzam Manual, page 46.
Gift Fulfilled
Bangkok Hotel - The Lebua's suites offer some of the best views in Bangkok, and Sirocco on the 63rd floor is the world’s highest al fresco restaurant. This hotel featured in the film Hangover 2, and will be the perfect location for our Hangover 14.
