Common questions

How does the gift doubling promotion work?

Every month on a random date within that month a registry with a wedding within 7-days of the random date is selected. Only those accounts with at least $250 in gifts from the time of account creation are eligible. The selected account receives an account balance bonus of 100% of all of the gifts provided to that account since creation, whether the gifts were previously redeemed or are still in the current account balance.

The selected account will be notified via direct email from Customer Service and the bonus funds will be redeemable immediately.

What is a honeymoon registry?

A honeymoon registry is similar to a traditional wedding registry, in which you sign up for the gifts you would like to receive for your wedding. With Traveler's Joy, you build a registry with your anticipated honeymoon activities and experiences. Guests contribute monetary gifts towards your dream honeymoon activities and experiences listed on your registry page. As you receive gifts, request them as often as you would like. We simply send you a bank check or wire so that your gifts can be used immediately and for anything!

  3. Your registry page will have an easy-to-remember web address that you can create (https://www.travelersjoy.com/CUSTOM) so letting everyone know where they can give you a gift is always simple. You can notify friends and family about your registry through a wedding website or other means. Also, Traveler's Joy is a partner with the world's largest registry center so your guests can easily find your registry by searching The Knot.
  4. Your guests visit your registry page and securely give a monetary gift towards your honeymoon experience using a credit card or via cash/check/transfer at a later time (if option is turned on). Redeem your monetary gifts at any time and you're off on the trip of your dreams!

When should I start registering for gifts?

Most couples wait too long to get their wedding website and registry set up. Everyone knows it can be very hectic to plan a wedding but you really can't go wrong getting your registry set up as soon as possible (check out our Instant Registry tool which makes setup a snap!). Many guests like to give early gifts — sometimes even before your pre-wedding showers or other events.

Who can create a registry?

As of Summer 2022, members must be residents of the United States. However, guests from many countries can provide gifts.

How much does it cost?

All of the great features of our system are 100% FREE to set-up and use. There are never "Upgrade" fees, subscriptions, or monthly fees. We NEVER sell your information to any outside party or have ads on your registry — or anywhere else. Unlike with some other honeymoon registry services, you’re not going to start getting inundated with marketing emails because we monetized your personal information.

Gifts provided to you via cash, check, or direct transfer are 100% FREE. For gifts provided using a credit card, a 2.95% service fee is deducted from the gift amount. You can choose to have your guests cover this fee for you, making all gifts 100% FREE to you. The service fee covers paying our awesome team a living wage with good benefits, all features and services of your registry, phone support five days a week, twenty-four hour email support, and support for your wedding guests who wish to purchase a gift over the phone (grandparents love this). There is also a small transaction fee on checkout, usually covered by your guests, which helps to cover processing the credit card transaction — which most people don’t realize can cost merchants like us up to 4%! We wish there was a way to make this part free as well but there’s no way around credit card processing fees.

Keep in mind — we never charge sales tax on any gift. The total of any fees, even when using a credit card, is always lower than what sales tax would be on a gift purchased from a store.

Want to see all the cool stuff you can do? Take 2 minutes and create your registry. If you change your mind later, it's easy for you to delete the account or make it inactive. You can do this without even contacting us, we're cool like that.

How do "free" honeymoon registries work?

We have a great blog post on this subject. Check it out →

What is the fee for?

We are proud to offer one of the lowest service fees in the industry. Pay the entire fee yourself (held back from gift amount), have your guests cover the fee (you get the entire amount of the gift), or split the fee 50/50 with your guests. It's good business to be upfront about fees and we've done so since our start in 2004. We keep our fee as low as possible while ensuring it covers both a high level of service and honeymoon registry innovation.

Our fee is very competitive given the high costs associated with accepting credit cards online. The cost for merchants that accept credit cards online is approximately 3%-4%. Giant online companies may get lower rates but fees for Internet-based companies are always more expensive than those charged to physical stores. Combined with overhead costs, that makes our profit margin very small. However, our business model is strong and built on our history of serving tens of thousands of couples every year.

Why accept credit cards if it is so expensive? Simply, guests would rather use their credit card because it's more convenient. We've found that gifts are, on average, 34% larger when the guest uses their credit card than if the gift was provided directly.

Are my guests charged sales tax?

Never! We do not ship physical goods so there is no sales tax.

How does the fee compare to a "traditional" wedding registry?

Typically, most couples request that gifts purchased from a physical store registry are sent to their home. If the shipping and handling fee, gift-wrapping fee, and sales tax associated with the purchase of the gift are included, this typically totals more than 12% of the gift's value. In fact, many of our Members find it less expensive for their guests to provide a Traveler's Joy gift compared to purchasing items at a physical store. This has the added benefit for our Members of increasing the likelihood the guest will increase the size of their gift.

Finally, a Traveler's Joy honeymoon registry gives your guests the convenience of purchasing a gift from their place of choice without worrying about shipping or carrying the gifts to the wedding or shower. Since Traveler's Joy simply sends you a check or bank transfer, you'll never have to deal with gift returns or exchanges.

Who can give a gift?

Anyone with a valid Visa, MasterCard, or Discover credit card. If the guest is not located in one of the countries listed below, our credit card processor may require additional information. We will work with the guest to facilitate this process.

American Samoa, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guam, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Republic Of Korea, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macao, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, United States Outlying Islands, Virgin Islands - British, and Virgin Islands - American

How do I split up the cost of an expensive item?

Traveler's Joy makes this easy! When you are adding an item to your registry, you will always see an updating "Total Amount" value. You can set "Cost Each" and "Quantity" in any combination which provides the desired total. For example, if you are registering for a $1,000 hotel stay, you could set "Cost Each" at $100 and "Quantity" to 10. Setting "Cost Each" at $50 and "Quantity" to 20 would also yield the same total amount. You have total flexibility. Setting up your expensive items as multiple gifts of smaller amounts makes it easy for your friends and family to give you a piece of an item or experience that is typically too expensive for one person to provide.

What is Instant Registry?

Our Instant Registry feature allows you to complete your registry in just minutes! When setting up your gift inventory you can choose from a list of premade theme based or location specific registries. With one click you can instantly add all of the items to your own registry. You can edit or delete any item at any time and also add plenty more of your own. Remember, with Traveler's Joy you redeem all of your gifts as cash so you have the flexibility to purchase your experiences, activities, and items when you are ready.

How many gifts should I register?

Over the 14+ years Traveler's Joy has been providing honeymoon registry services, we've found that 1.5x the number of invited wedding guests is your best bet. This gives guests enough gift options for your wedding plus any other events you're hosting. Keep in mind that an expensive item that you split into smaller parts — like a $1,000 airfare upgrade, saved on your registry as (10) $100 gifts — counts as the quantity you split into. In this example, "10."

Can I put non-honeymoon items on my registry?

Of course! Feel free to add anything to your registry that will bring great experiences and memories for your new life together.

How do I inform my guests about my registry?

Your custom registry page will have an easy-to-remember web address that you can create (https://www.travelersjoy.com/members/CUSTOM/) and share. Wedding registries should never be mentioned in your wedding invitations. However, creating a wedding website and including it in your wedding invitations is a great way to let guests know about all of the details of your wedding (including your registry!). You can easily tell people about your wedding website through e-postcards (with a link to your site) or announcement cards (that announce your site) in the wedding invitation. There are several wedding website companies to choose from that are free or charge a low monthly fee.

If you do not have a wedding website, Traveler's Joy is a partner with the world's largest registry center so your guests can easily find your registry by searching The Knot.

What if some items are not fully funded?

You are always able to redeem all received gifts. While we hope you receive everything on your registry, items do not need to be fully funded in order for you to redeem the funds. If you register for a $1,000 item, split it into 10 $100 gifts, and then receive only 8, you will be able to redeem the $800 (minus the service fee).

Do we have to buy exactly what we registered for?

No! All gifts received on Traveler's Joy are redeemed as cash. This gives you complete flexibility if honeymoon plans change or you decide to go in a different direction with a gift, activity, or experience.

How do I redeem my gifts?

Sign into your account. Within the "My Account" section, click on "Redeem Gifts". We offer three delivery options: U.S. Bank ACH (by far the fastest method), PayPal transfer, & Check sent via USPS Mail. All U.S. redemption options are FREE. There is a 2% ($20 max) fee for International PayPal transfers. (How long does it take to receive my gifts?)

  • You can redeem gifts in your account as often as needed, though most couples do so only once or twice around the wedding day or soon after.
  • For security reasons, we can only issue all gift redemptions in the name of the primary account holder (also called Traveler #1). This name cannot be changed once a gift has been given (Why?).
  • For PayPal requests, we can only use the email address that was initially used to set up your registry (Why?).
  • It takes 72-hours for funds from a credit card transaction to be available for a gift redemption (Why?).

How long does it take to receive my gifts?

Getting you your gifts quickly (and if in the U.S. — always FREE) is a high priority to us!

Some other registry services can take up to (10) full days to send a bank transfer and may require personal information like your Social Security number or date of birth. We will never ask you for this information!

The fastest redemption option for U.S. residents is the ACH Bank Transfer. These are processed within (1) business day but allow up to (3) additional business days for the funds to appear in your bank account. PayPal redemptions are processed within (3) business days. Check redemptions are MAILED within (3) business days of the redemption and delivery time will vary by location. Please allow up to (10) business days to receive a bank check in the mail. All U.S. redemption options are always FREE.

Why can't I redeem via PayPal if my email address was changed?

The email address tied to your PayPal account is the unique identifier for that account. If someone gained access to your Traveler's Joy account and wanted to redeem gifts to their PayPal account they would need to update the email address on your registry. While there is an extra security step in place to change your account email address, we prefer to err on the side of caution and not allow PayPal gift redemptions when the email address has changed. Note that you can easily change the email address tied to your PayPal account to match the email you used on Traveler's Joy. See the help section of PayPal for more information.

What is the best way to thank a guest?

We believe a personal thank you card is always best. Even better, include a photo of the activity or experience you received in the thank you card. We provide you with all guest contact information and an easy way to keep track of whom you still need to thank. On your Account Management page, click on the "Thank You List" button to access the system. From there, you can also print out a contact form that lists all gifts and the relevant guest information. Note that this button will not be visible until you have received at least one gift.

Can I protect my registry with a password?

Yes, simply sign into your account and click on "Edit Account Information". From here you can turn protection on/off and specify a password. Note that guests who do not have this password will have absolutely no access to your registry. Traveler's Joy support staff will never share your password. If you use this feature, please ensure everyone you wish to have access to provide gifts from your registry is informed of your password!

Is my personal information safe?

We will not share or sell any of the personal information of our registrants or guests (read our Privacy Policy). All of your personal information is stored on secure servers at our data center in Parsippany, New Jersey. In addition, we do not save credit card information once a gift transaction has been completed. The gift transaction itself is encrypted (see "Is credit card information secure?" below).

Is credit card information secure?

Our site uses industry standard 256-bit SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to ensure that guests' sensitive data (credit card number, name, address, etc.) is transmitted securely - every time. In addition, we use internal measures to further increase each individual transaction's data security.

When we ask for guests' credit card numbers or other personal information, we transfer that information from their computer to ours via SSL. SSL encrypts the data before it is transmitted. In the rare event that someone "listens in" on the wire, they'll get only encrypted information. We do not store your guests' credit card information after the transaction has been successfully completed.

What if I purchased a registry item elsewhere?

If the registry page is set up to accept the cash/check/transfer payment option, you can complete the checkout process for free and the registry will be updated. At some later time you can present the couple with the item(s). If the couple has not activated the cash/check payment option, please contact them (or a close friend or family member) to let them know they can update the registry to reflect your purchase.

Where does the money go when I receive a gift?

After a guest's credit card is charged, the money is deposited into accounts at Capital One and Wells Fargo. The balances in these accounts are used only for Member gifts and redemption requests.

Why not just receive money at the shower or wedding?

Receiving funds the day before you depart for your honeymoon makes it difficult to pre-pay any portion of the trip. With most weddings on a weekend, just having the time to deposit your gifts before departing is unlikely. Our service provides you the opportunity to pre-pay certain parts of your trip and gives you an easy to use system of tracking gifts received. We also allow you to receive gifts toward an experience you will cherish forever. Personalizing a gift with a certain experience or activity is a great way for a guest to be remembered!

How do I know when I receive a gift?

An email detailing the gift will be automatically sent to both the guest and you (you also have the option of opting-out of gift email notifications). In addition, your account information will be immediately updated. The guest can also request, for an additional fee, a custom gift card to be sent directly to you or to themselves (to give to you at a later time).

Why do I receive notification cards for only some gifts?

Elegantly designed and embossed gift notification cards are an optional addition for gift givers on checkout. These cards can be mailed to the couple directly or sent to the gift giver to be presented at a later time. Many gift givers appreciate the opportunity to purchase a tangible representation of the item(s) they purchase from a registry. This option was added at their request.

How long can I keep my account open?

Your account can have a balance for up to two years after your wedding date. Two months before the two year period, we will attempt to contact you via email and a letter to the address we have on file. If we do not receive a response within two months, your account will be closed.

Why can't I change the primary account name?

Once you complete the registration process, you cannot change the name of Traveler #1. While our servers are secured by the latest technology, someone could still gain access to your account if they discover your sign in information or if you use our site on a public computer and do not sign out. Since gift redemption checks and money transfers will only be distributed to the Traveler #1 name, there is another layer of protection in one of these rare events. Even if a malicious user has access to your account, they still cannot get a check or money transfer sent to them in their own name.

Note: Once an account has at least one gift there are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.

Why does it take 72-hours for my gifts to be available?

In order to keep fees low for everyone, we need to make sure that credit card transactions are not fraudulent. The 72-hour delay allows us to catch any fraudulent activity. It's an unfortunate but necessary measure for us to take, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
