Patagonia?
Where's that?
How did you guys decide to go there?
Don’t they make clothes?
These are the common reactions when we tell people where we are planning to spend our honeymoon. True, Patagonia isn't a traditional honeymoon destination like the Caribbean or Hawaii. It isn’t even on the radar with exotic locations like Bora Bora, Tahiti, or Bali. But as you know, or will learn, Lindsey and I aren’t people that subscribe to traditional schools of thought.
Initially I wanted to surprise Lindsey with a honeymoon vacation and spent hours researching dozens of destinations but nothing jumped out at me. Frustrated at my lack of progress on making a decision, I asked Lindsey if she had any thoughts, somewhere in our conversation Lindsey mentioned Patagonia and we realized it was a place both of us had always wanted to go. Lindsey had read a National Geographic article about the amazing landscape and topography unique to the region. A place where glaciers are literally uprooting trees as they advance and towering granite spires stretch toward the sky. I too had read about Patagonia and the epic fly fishing the region has to offer.
I researched Patagonia and was almost overwhelmed by what a huge and diverse region it is. Luckily I was referred to a company called Bio Bio Expeditions who offered exactly what we were looking for… An Adventure! Bio Bio, is an amazing outfitter who has been featured in magazines like National Geographic. Their mission is to connect people with the environment and integrate them with the local customs and culture. They organize trips in the US, Canada, South and Central America and Asia. They didn’t offer exactly what we were looking for but 24 hours after contacting them the owner of the company called me back and customized a trip for us that will include hiking, rafting, mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, great food, a sampling of the local culture and much, much more!
Our plan is to spend a few days hiking through several of Argentina’s National Parks including a visit to some of the largest glaciers in the world. From there we will venture to Chili where we will make camp on the banks of the Futaleufu, pronounced “Foo-tah-lay-oh-foo”. Camp provides a number of possibilities and each day offers a new and exciting challenge… or the option to relax with a peaceful yoga session, a couples massage, a soak in the wood fired hot tub and possibly a candle light wine tasting to top it off!
We can’t tell you how excited we are to embark on this amazing adventure! We’ve included some of the activities and experiences we’ll be enjoying. Thank you so much for helping us make this dream come true. It is a once in a life time experience and we look forward to making the most of it!
