Thanks for visiting our honeymoon registry!! We are really excited to take a trip-of-a-lifetime to beautiful New Zealand. We're planning to stay for 2 weeks, but it looks like we will only be able to see a small portion of all they have to offer. With your help, we will make the most of our trip, and come back with some really special memories.

We will start our trip on the east coast of the US in February 2012. 22 hours later we will land in sunny Auckland, in the northern part of the North Island. It will be late summer there, but we're hoping to avoid the tourist crowds. We will be camping through most of it so hopefully we can manage on a budget! Most of the activities on our registry are for the cost of the campsites as we tour.

Once we arrive, we will launch into two weeks of touring off the beaten path. We'll spend the first few days on the North Island, checking out hot springs, waterfalls, hidden beaches, geysers, and glowworm caves. We'll make our way to the south of the island and take the ferry that crosses Cook Strait. Once we land on the South Island, the real majesty of NZ will be before us. Mountain climbs, glaciers, sea caves, penguins and seals, and so much more. Eventually, we will have to start making our way back to the North Island for the last few days before our trip back home.

We've tried to give everyone a good taste of what we'll be doing there, but we will make sure to fill you in on the details of any adventure you contribute towards. Maybe we can convince you to visit there too, one day.

Love

Rental car--we are going to be covering an entire country in two weeks... A rental car will take us over sandy beaches and through running rivers. We'll have to watch carefully for quicksand! And remember to stay on the left side of the road...

Guidebooks and Maps - Where are we? Alix is a terrible navigator so you can help us avoid stress on the trip by giving us an upgrade to the GPS. We'll also need guidebooks and maps so we know the best hikes and campgrounds!

Upgrade us to a hotel for a night or two. Wouldn't a night in a fluffy warm bed be a nice break from the camping? This would be a perfect rainy day backup plan.

Kauri forests - these ancient trees are huge and unique to New Zealand. We'll make sure to visit the largest one standing today, Tane Mahuta, which is almost 14m around, and give it a big hug!
Gift Fulfilled
Arhoa Island Eco - This is our best chance to spot a wild kiwi--the bird, that is. We'll stay up way past Alix's bedtime and hit the trail with a red flashlight. Maybe we'll only hear their eerie calls, or maybe we'll get to see one in person.

Million Dollar View Road - It's only 16km long, but it's supposed to have the most scenic views anywhere on the North Island. We've never been inclined to turn down a good road! We'll camp at stunning Matauri Bay, which has a very interesting history...
Gift Fulfilled
Windows Walk - We'll hike through the ruins of a gold mine, over a signature NZ swingbridge, and through a series of short tunnels that open in "windows" to the gorge below.

Mt. Ngauruhoe-We'll just call this Mt. Doom. You didn't think we'd go to NZ and not get in some LOTR, did you? This is a looong hike but if Frodo and Sam did it with their little hobbit legs, then it should be easy for us-no ring throwing at the top tho!
Gift Fulfilled
Waipu Cave - Once our eyes adjust to the dark, a galaxy of glowworms will light our way as we explore this cave. We'll head south afterwards and pitch our tent south of Auckland at Cathedral Cove
Gift Fulfilled
Putangirua Pinnacles - Another LOTR scene come to life. These badlands have some really unique geology that we'll explore with a long hike.

We'll start in the Southern Island at the far northwest corner, at Cape Farewell. We’ll do a clifftop walk surrounded by the Tasman Sea. There's even a Fur Seal colony at the foot of the cliff! Then, we’ll set up camp on the gorgeous Wharariki beach.
Gift Fulfilled
Anapai Bay and Mutton Bay--rumored to be the most beautiful part of the most beautiful beach on the South Island. The sand here is orange. We'll be camping again here!
Gift Fulfilled
Wine Tasting - New Zealand's climate is perfect for fine wine growing, wineries, and vineyards. We will sample internationally acclaimed wines in the Marlborough region of the South Island.

We'll slosh through the shallow Waima River straight to the entrance of Sawcut Gorge. This 50m high slot canyon rivals those in Utah! Then we'll camp right on the shore of nearby Marfells Beach.

Surfing at Kaikoura! We will definitely need lessons. We'll watch the experienced surfers at the Meatworks break, then try our own hand at it. Wish us luck!!
Gift Fulfilled
Castle Hill - we'll follow in Chris Sharma's footsteps... Though we probably won't be tackling any 5.15s, we will certainly try some bouldering on these beautiful rocks that were featured in the Chronicles of Narnia.
Gift Fulfilled
Punakaiki Rocks -- At low tide, these rocks display beautiful layers of limestone. But at high tide, the water coming in under the rocks comes alive! Afterwards, we'll set up camp at a gentler section of the nearby coast.
Gift Fulfilled
Franz Josef Glacier - A must-see for anyone visiting NZ. We've chosen a hike that will let us see this beauty from above.
Gift Fulfilled
Moeraki boulders - Them's some round rocks! We'll get to explore the beach that made these oddities, and will stick around for penguin happy hour at 6:00.
Gift Fulfilled
Catlins Waterfalls and Curio Bay - We'll explore a jungle and end up at picturesque McLeans Falls. Then we'll set up camp at Curio Bay, where if we're lucky, we will get to meet some mini-dolphins and Yellow Eyed Penguins!
