Welcome to our honeymoon website!

We must start off by saying that your presence at our wedding is the greatest gift we could ask for. The time, effort and expense of traveling to be with us is something we deeply appreciate and we are so thrilled to celebrate this happy occasion with you.

Since we have been together for close to 10 years, we already have most of the traditional wedding gift items a newly engaged couple needs. Crock-Pot? Got it. Toaster? Sure do. Lemon zester? You bet. So we decided to offer our guests a popular new wedding gift alternative – a honeymoon gift registry – tailored just for us, by us. Our ideal gift is to spend two weeks embarking on once-in-a-lifetime adventures that we will remember as the most incredible experiences of our lives.

As most of you know, we were born travelers. Megan has visited 46 countries and Dan has spent time in 43 countries so it was a bit challenging to find a destination new to both of us. Africa is one of the least traveled continents for us so it was natural to consider a safari adventure. After thoughtful consideration, we selected Uganda and Tanzania for their diverse landscapes and abundance of wildlife.

This Traveler’s Joy registry provides our family and friends the opportunity to be part of our journey by giving monetary gifts towards a specific excursion on our honeymoon. If giving bath towels and kitchenware doesn't excite you, this site gives you a way to help us celebrate our marriage, splurge on our honeymoon and create memories that will last us a lifetime. Traveler’s Joy has given us the flexibility to outline below the truly incredible experiences we will be sharing together (including an item on Megan's bucket list!). We selected all of the photos, wrote the descriptions and smiled in amazement at the African adventure ahead of us. We hope you enjoy browsing and we look forward to being able to say "Thank you for making this honeymoon dream a reality!"

We think that travel is the best way to grow as people, the best way to become closer to one another and the only way to see, understand and appreciate different cultures. We will forever be bitten by the travel bug and this will be our first adventure traveling together as a married couple! We believe that if you can travel together then you can make it through anything in life together.

We will do our best to capture your contribution via photo and include it in your much-deserved thank you note.

Thanks for visiting and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday, October 8 or earlier!

Megan and Dan

We're going to East African Safaris in Uganda and Tanzania!

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain

We will be visiting two countries on this African adventure – Uganda and Tanzania. Each was intentionally selected for its unique experiences and cultures – plus it is two more stamps to add to our well worn passports! We customized this trip to reflect our interests and fully immerse us in true cultural experiences. Our lodging includes charming guest houses, a family run farm, an authentic lodge built among massive boulders and tented camps that periodically move to follow the animals. Dining, safari activities and services of a private driver in each country will be equally memorable. Read on for all the spectacular details…

UGANDA
Our journey begins in Uganda with a few days of relaxation upon arrival. While adjusting to the time zones and jet lag, we have some leisurely local activities planned including a visit to the Equator. We will test, and report back, if water really does drain differently on “The Line.” With a private driver, we will travel across the country (about a 4 hour trek) to Kibale National Park in northwestern Uganda. This evergreen rainforest is well known for its abundant population of chimpanzees.

Enter Megan’s bucket list – a one-on-one experience with a wild chimpanzee. Megan has loved chimpanzees since she was very young and at one time hoped to have one as a pet. That dream has been overruled by practicality; however, the closest connection to the dream will be our visit to the chimpanzee’s natural habitat in Kibale National Park. We will embark on some guided chimpanzee treks in hope of seeing them in their most wild state. We will also spend one night on Ngamba Island, exclusively dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of chimpanzees that have been injured or orphaned in the wild. By participating in the Caregiver For A Day program, we will each be paired with a young chimpanzee who is new to the island and being slowly integrated with the other chimpanzee residents. If all goes well, we may hold their hand, carry them and/or provide encouraging support to make them feel comfortable joining the larger group. Without a doubt, a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

TANZANIA
Our journey continues in Tanzania where the more traditional safari activities will mesmerize us. Some highlights will include:
Lake Manyara National Park – a small park with waterfalls, ancient trees and open plains where elephant, buffalo and antelope roam (…oh give me a home where the buffalo…). Special to this park are tree-climbing lions, Maasai giraffes so dark they look like they have been dipped in chocolate, close encounters with hungry hippos and 400+ species of birds.
Olduvai Gorge – a World Heritage Site, often referred to as The Cradle of Mankind, features fossils dating back 2.5 million years ago. Vast research on evolution and human origins typically begins here.
A visit to a local Maasai village – this is high on Dan’s list – this semi-nomadic group is well known for their distinct customs and dress. We will see their unique circular homes and marvel at the intricate and beautifully beaded jewelry worn by the women.
Ngorongoro Crater – often called the Eighth Wonder of the World, this collapsed volcano lies in a cluster of sometimes smoking volcanoes and gives the impression that you are standing in a deep soup bowl. Hosting the highest concentration of predators in the world, the barking we will hear at night are the calls of zebras and baboons to warn their group of a possible attack. We are almost assured sightings of lions, elephants, hippos and cheetahs.
Serengeti National Park – a legendary mecca for most safari goers, this will be the hub of our animal viewing experience. Our February visit was designed around the Great Migration, a movement of millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle in search of food and water. It is estimated that 8,000 wildebeest calves are born each day during the annual movement. Also watching the herds are the hungry cheetahs, lions, buzzards and vultures. This will be the true circle of life.

As you can see, this is not your average honeymoon. We are not your average couple. So a perfect match all around! Africa, here we come!

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better start running." - African Proverb

How can we be this close and not stop for a touristy photo with one foot on either side of the world?! We'll watch experiments on water draining in the northern hemisphere versus the southern and Dan will buy the obligatory Equator t-shirt.
Gift Fulfilled
For a glimpse of wildlife that lives near water, we will participate in a guided swamp walk in Kibale Forest National Park. This is our chance to see primates, butterflies and birds cohabitating among the flowers and indigenous trees of western Uganda.

Gift Fulfilled
We will travel by boat on Lake Victoria to and from Ngamba Island to visit the chimpanzee sanctuary. Currently, Ngamba Island is a safe and protected home to 40 orphaned chimpanzees. So remote, a boat is the only way to visit the island.

A rare and unique opportunity to cross off of Megan's bucket list - up close and personal with a chimpanzee. We'll participate in the Caregiver For A Day program holding their hands, supporting them and introducing them to the larger chimps. Incredible!

Our welcome to Tanzania will include a meet and greet at the airport - an attentive driver holding a sign with our names on it! While navigating the busy and bumpy roads, we'll be driven to our first stop - the Outpost Lodge.
Gift Fulfilled
We look forward to snacks and stories around the campfire at the Outpost Lodge. As a central stopping point for safari groups coming and going, here is where we learn of what awaits us in the next few days. Did they really see a pride of lions?!
Gift Fulfilled
According to the itinerary, the Outpost Lodge has a wide assortment of souvenirs and curios. What is a curio anyway? Guess we'll have to find out for ourselves.

Game viewing excursions from Bougainvillea Safari Lodge include hippo, lion, cheetah, black rhino, zebra and many different species of birds. One animal missing? The giraffe - their gangly legs can't negotiate the steep incline down into the crater.

Dan, without a doubt, will spend a good deal of time admiring, pondering and haggling for unique African masks. At least two masks will come home with us as memorable additions to his extensive (and 15+ year) mask collection.
Gift Fulfilled
While Dan is dabbling with mask haggling, Megan will be buying, writing and mailing postcards. Her collection started as a toddler and although she loves getting them (hint hint for your next trip), she adores sending them. Stamps not included.

If you want a postcard, we need stamps! We don't promise a timely delivery but hope it will arrive within 6 months of our return home. Fingers crossed!

It's over already? This box of tissues will wipe away our tears as we bid a fond farewell to this magical honeymoon adventure.
