Frequently Asked Questions

What is an online honeymoon registry?
A honeymoon registry is similar to a traditional wedding registry, in which you sign up for the gifts you would like to receive for your wedding. With Traveler's Joy, you build a registry with your anticipated honeymoon activities and experiences. Guests contribute monetary gifts towards your dream honeymoon activities and experiences listed on your registry page. As you receive gifts, request them as often as you would like. We simply send you a bank check or wire so that your gifts can be used immediately and for anything!

 Why Traveler's Joy?
The memories from your honeymoon will remain long after housewares and other gifts have gone out of style. Give your guests the chance to contribute to that unique experience.

Tell me more about the service fee...
We are proud to offer one of the lowest service fees in the industry. Unlike many other sites, we have the very simple fee structure explained above. We feel it is a good business practice to be upfront about what our fee is and how that fee is distributed across the company (see graph below). We keep our fee as low as possible while ensuring that it covers both a high level of service and honeymoon registry innovation.

Our fee is very competitive given the high costs associated with accepting credit cards online. The average cost for merchants that accept credit cards online is approximately 3%. Large online companies like Amazon.com may get lower rates but fees for Internet-based companies are always more expensive than those charged to physical stores. Combined with overhead costs, that makes our profit margin very small. However, our business model is strong and built on our history of serving tens of thousands of couples every year.

One may ask, why accept credit cards if it is so expensive? The reason is because gift-givers would rather use their credit card than give a check or cash because it is far more convenient. We've found that gifts are, on average, 34% larger when the gift-giver uses their credit card than if the gift was provided with cash or a check.

Where does the fee go?

We encourage prospective Members to learn what rates some of our competitors are currently charging using the chart in the section above. Some may offer a lower fee, but only if travel is booked with their service. We think those services will simply mark up the travel a bit to make up for the loss of a service fee. Some have no service fee at all and advertise as "free" honeymoon registries. What they don't usually inform customers is that to contribute using a credit card, guests will need to sign up for a 3rd party payment service (PayPal) - and even then the customer will pay some sort of credit card processing fee directly to that service. The "free" services also tend to increase revenue by plastering your registry with advertising and selling your contact information to marketing firms. There's nothing wrong with the different approaches to the honeymoon registry market, but we think when prospective Members look at all angles, our model will look the best.

How and when is the service fee assessed?
The 7.5% service fee is assessed when a gift is given to your registry account. For example, if you have $9.25 in your account, you have received a gift of $10.00 and the fee of $0.75 has been assessed. Unlike with most other honeymoon registries, gift givers are never charged any extra fee. If you place an item item on your registry that costs $100, it will cost your friends and family exactly $100 to purchase it for you.

Are my gift givers charged a fee?
Absolutely not. Unlike most other honeymoon registries, we do not charge gift givers a fee. We do not believe that guests should have to pay a fee in order to give you a gift.

How does your fee compare to a physical store wedding registry?
Typically, most couples request that gifts purchased from a physical store registry are sent to their home. If the shipping and handling fee, gift-wrapping fee, and sales tax associated with the purchase of the gift are included, this typically totals more than 12% of the gift's value. In fact, many of our Members find it less expensive for their guests to use Traveler's Joy than registering for items at a physical store. This has the added benefit for our Members of increasing the likelihood the guest will increase the size of their gift.

Finally, a Traveler's Joy honeymoon registry gives your guests the convenience of purchasing a gift from their place of choice without worrying about shipping or carrying the gifts to the wedding or shower. Since Traveler's Joy simply sends you a check or bank transfer, you'll never have to deal with gift returns or exchanges.

What if I want my gift-givers to cover my fee?
Easy, just add a bit to the cost of each item you put on your registry. Everything on our system is fully customizable. We've found gift givers don't like an "extra" fee, but if it's part of the overall gift amount they are much happier to provide it.

Is sales tax charged to the gift-giver?
Never! We do not have a physical storefront so there is no sales tax whatsoever. However, we do have a really cool office in Wilmington, DE with tons of games and toys. You are welcome to visit!

How do I inform my friends and family about my site?
You can use our free email registry notice postcard service, our complimentary invitation insert template, or, better yet, create your own unique way to notify people (mail postcards, letters, website, etc.). Your custom home page will have an easy-to-remember web address that you can create (http://www.travelersjoy.com/members/CUSTOM/) so letting everyone know where they can give you a gift is always simple.

Please note: Your customized website address cannot be changed after registration is completed.

How do I receive the gifts in my Traveler's Joy account?
Simply log into the "My Account" page and click the "Redeem Gifts" link. From there you can request your gifts to be sent to you. We offer four delivery options (USPS 1st Class Mail, PayPal, U.S. Bank ACH, or International Bank Wire Transfer). While PayPal and checks sent USPS 1st Class Mail are free, fees apply for U.S. Bank ACH and International Bank Wire Transfer requests.
  • Due to security reasons, we can only issue all gift redemptions in the name of the primary account holder (also called Honeymooner/Traveler #1). This name cannot be changed once a gift has been given (Why?).
  • For PayPal requests, we can only use the email address that was first registered with Traveler's Joy (Why?).
  • It takes 72-hours for funds from a credit card transaction to be available for a gift redemption (Why?).

Why can't I redeem gifts via PayPal if my email address was changed?
The email address tied to your PayPal account is the unique identifier for that account. If someone gained access to your Traveler's Joy account and wanted to redeem gifts to their PayPal account they would need to update the email address on your registry. While there is an extra security step in place to change your account email address, we prefer to err on the side of caution and not allow PayPal gift redemptions when the email address has changed.

What is the best way to thank a guest?
We believe a personal thank you card is always best. Even better, include a photo of the activity or experience you received in the thank you card. Traveler's Joy provides you with all gift-giver contact information and an easy way to keep track of who you still need to thank. On your Account Management page, click on the "Thank You List" button to access the system. From there, you can also print out a contact form that lists all gifts and the relevant giver information. Note that this button will not be visible until you have received at least one gift.

 Is my personal information safe?
We will not share or sell any of the personal information of our registrants or gift givers (read our Privacy Policy). All of your personal information is stored on secure servers at our data center in Parsippany, New Jersey. In addition, we do not save credit card information once a gift transaction has been completed. The gift transaction itself is encrypted (see "Is credit card information secure?" below).

Is credit card information secure for those that give me gifts?
Our site uses industry standard 128-bit SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to ensure that gift-giver sensitive data (credit card number, name, address, etc.) is transmitted securely - every time. In addition, we use internal measures to further increase each individual transaction's data security.

When we ask for gift giver credit card numbers or other personal information, we transfer that information from their computer to ours via SSL. SSL encrypts the data before it is transmitted. In the rare event that someone "listens in" on the wire, they'll get only encrypted information. We do not store your gift givers' credit card information after the transaction has been successfully completed.

Where does the money go when I receive a gift?
After a gift giver's credit card is charged, the money is deposited into FDIC insured bank accounts at Bank of America and Wells Fargo. The balances in these accounts are used only for Member gifts and redemption requests.

Why not just give money at the shower or wedding?
Receiving cards with checks and cash the day before a couple departs for their honeymoon makes it difficult to pre-pay any portion of their trip. With most weddings on a weekend, just having the time to deposit the checks and cash before departing is unlikely. The Traveler's Joy service provides the bride and groom the opportunity to pre-pay certain parts of their trip and gives them an easy to use system of tracking gifts received. The Traveler's Joy service allows you to give a gift toward something the bride and groom will cherish forever. We believe personalizing the gift with a certain experience or activity is a great way to be remembered!

How do I know when I receive a gift?
An email detailing the gift will be automatically sent to both the gift giver and you (you also have the option of opting-out of gift email notifications). In addition, your account information will be immediately updated. The gift giver can also request, for an additional fee, a custom gift card to be sent directly to you or to themselves (to give to you at a later time).

How long can I keep a balance in my Traveler's Joy account?
Your account can have a balance for up to two years after your wedding date. Two months before the two year period, we will attempt to contact you via email and a letter to the address we have on file. If we do not receive a response within two months, your account will be closed.

 Why can't I change the name of Honeymooner/Traveler #1?
Once you complete the registration process, you cannot change the name of Honeymooner #1. While our servers are secured by the latest technology, someone could still gain access to your account if they discover your login information or if you use our site on a public computer and do not log out. Since gift redemption checks and money transfers will only be distributed to the Honeymooner #1 name, there is another layer of protection in one of these rare events. Even if a malicious user has access to your account, they still cannot get a check or money transfer sent to them in their own name.

Please note: Once an account has at least one gift there are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.

Why does it take 72-hours for my gifts to be available for redemption?
In order to keep fees low for everyone, we need to make sure that credit card transactions are not fraudulent. The 72-hour delay allows us to catch any fraudulent activity. It's an unfortunate but necessary measure for us to take, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
