Paul Mullan & Lindsay Spencer
Welcome to our travelersjoy webpage. We are so excited about our honeymoon and getting settled in as newlyweds. There's a lot to do before then but we are having fun planning it all out. As you all know, we both met each other in Gaborone as people who had traveled far from their homes to contribute the efforts in Botswana to combat HIV. Beyond traveling for work, we also love to travel for pleasure, so a honeymoon gift is a perfect gift for us, and it also makes traveling with less gift luggage a lot easier too! We'll be posting pictures of our honeymoon after we get back, so check in and wish us safe travels!
Many of you have asked the story of how Paul met and then later proposed to Lindsay. While it is probably a better story when told in person by a smiling Lindsay, a close second is a written account, which goes like this...
How we met:
Everything started when Paul met Linds while working together at a paediatric HIV clinic in Gaborone, the Botswana-Baylor Children's Centre of Excellence. Paul had been working there for a year as a paediatrician before Lindsay appeared on the scene as their first clinical psychologist. After many games (more like "lessons") of squash, a few romantic dinners, a trip to Uganda and lots of laughing and talking - under a lightening sky, we decided to start "the rest of our time together."
The proposal story:
We had 8 months of incredible fun together, building our love for one another, including travel to Lindsay's family in South Africa and Swaziland and to Paul's family in Washington D.C. Every month, on our "monthiversary," Paul had given me one of his trademark "4-colour Bic pens." On the 3rd of June, 2009, I had been giving Paul some playful strop (translation for American folk: "verbal discipline") about not getting a pen, per his tradition, while celebrating our 8th month together on our trip overseas visiting his family. Later that night, he brought my luggage over to my place so I could unpack. Upon opening the luggage, I noticed a small wrapped gift that was obvious, by his boy-wrapping abilities, to be one of those pens. I nearly ripped open the wrapping, but Paul told me to be gentle, and upon unwrapping it, I saw that the wrapping was a picture of a giraffe, cut-out from one of our favourite game reserve maps (Khama Rhino Sanctuary). On the inside of the wrapping was taped an email that was dated 8th October 2008, sent by Paul to himself, simply saying "She's the one", in the hopes of eventually printing it out one day for such a proposal. He had also written "Will you marry me?" on the paper and promptly got on to one knee, and asked me out loud, just to double his chances of a "yes" in reply! The rest is history!

We start our honeymoon right after our wedding ceremony and reception in the Midlands north of Pietermaritzburg. We hop on a long flight to the states and land in Phoenix, Arizona.
We check into the Scottsdale Fairmont resort and recover in luxury, mostly with our eyes closed recovering from that long flight. Refreshed (somewhat) and excited to be honeymooning, we don't even notice the jetlag and drive up to see one of the most beautiful places in America, the Red Rocks of Sedona for 3 nights.
After getting our a taste of the great outdoors of Arizona in Sedona, looking up at the Red Rocks, it's time to look down - down into the world's biggest and deepest canyon - the Grand Canyon! We'll be hiking, sunsetting, and just spending more quality time with each other here for our last two nights of the honeymoon.
Back to Phoenix on Sunday and it's time to fly back to Houston to set up our nest and unpack our luggage!
